Studying nucleic acids provided us with the opportunity to extract our very own DNA from our cheek cells. Using powerade, dish soap, and rubbing alcohol, we were able to see our own DNA! How awesome?!

Practicing the Scientific Method
Today in Science 10 we collected data for 4 of the 6 experiments we designed to practice the scientific method. Each group tested to see who was better, males or females, at doing the following: 1) Ice Bucket Challenge---who can hold their hands in ice cold water the longest, males or females? 2) Gummy Bear Catch---who can catch 5 gummy bears using only their mouth, males or females? 3) Banana Swing Challenge---which team can score the greatest number of goals using a banana tied to their waste, males or females? 4) Flappy Bird Challenge---who can reach the highest level playing Flappy Bird, males or females? Here are some pictures from our class. Science truly is alot of fun!

Busy Friday in Ms Roach's Classes!
Wow what a great way to spend a Friday! In Science 10 we practiced the Scientific Method by performing an experiment to "suck" a shelled hard boiled egg into a narrow necked Erlenmeyer flask and then we performed a second experiment to remove the egg from the flask. Below are some photos from our egg labs.
In Biology 30, we tested foods for the presence of both starch and sugar and the results were amazing. Here are before and after photos of the monosaccharide test.
In Health Science 20, seeing how we are studying different medical knowledge systems, invited two guests into our class, Wendy Nesseth from Body Poetry Fitness and Tim Oehler from Harmony Massage. Wendy shared with us yoga, while Tim talked about both massage therapy and tai chi. Here are some photos from our class.

William Whitehawk shares Traditional Knowledge with HS20
Today in Health Science 20, William Whitehawk, an elder from Winnipeg stopped by our classroom. In exchange for tobacco (one of the 4 sacred medicines), he shared with us his knowledge of traditional medicine. We learnt about the medicine wheel, several different medicinal plants, and the creation story. Most memorable was probably the sweet grass braid, rat root and sneezer.
